When my daughter was starting to show signs, of being interested in using the potty at 2, I wanted a book that mimicked our philosophy of potty learning (child led). At the bookstore there are many different options. Most of the ones I flipped through, were very demanding and aggressive about potty learning. I was about to leave the book store without a potty book, when I pulled out one more from the shelf.
My daughter and I read it together, and I was delighted by the wording in this book. There is a book out there for child led potty learning, and this is it! "A Potty for Me!" contains phrases like, "But mom says that's OK" and "when I'm ready". Children have complete control of eating, sleeping and using the potty. This book does a great job of introducing using the potty without making the child feel trapped by their interest in it (which usually diminishes or eliminates their interest). While my daughter no longer wears diapers (and hasn't for about a year, she is 3 years 3 months) she still enjoys it when we read this book. |

| This little book has flaps that open on every page and my daughter loves that. As a mom, I like that that child in the book does not catch on to potty training right away. He has to try a little. He is not ready right away. The book also explains to the child why he/she might still have to wear diapers at night. I like it a lot...plus who doesn't love Karen Katz? |

As other reviewers said, the flap is a full page. Having other Katz books, I thought that parts of pages would lift (like a toilet lid). The pages are not as heavy as other Katz books, so it won't hold up to a lot of handling. This was the first potty training book I bought, so I'm not sure if it is weird or not, but the kid is very resistant to potty training (which is probably just realistic). I'm also not sure I'd really call this a "manual" as the title implies...it doesn't get into much detail about how you potty other than sitting on the toilet and waiting for something to happen.
Illustrations are cute as all the Katz books are. The child is pretty gender neutral, so you could tell your kid its a boy or a girl. |

We have a lot of other Karen Katz Lift-the-Flap books, so when I started shopping for a potty book, this one was a natural. If my daughter were writing this review, she would give it 5 stars. She LOVES it. And therein lies the problem. She is totally obsessed with this book and wants us to read it to her at least 10 times a day. This book is SO ANNOYING that I can barely tolerate it. The grammar is bad ('Me and bunny sit awhile'....how 'bout 'Bunny and I?!'), the meter is uneven, and some of the rhymes are just terrible (who rhymes 'together' with 'water?'). I am a stickler for grammar and this kind of thing just drives me nuts. The other Karen Katz books don't have these problems, so I'm not sure what happened here. My recommendation is to preview children's books in person before buying them and make sure that you won't find the book too annoying after the 1000th reading. You never know what stupid thing is going to become your kid's next obsession.
